FNU SOFTBALL TEAM DEFEATS CROSSTOWN RIVALS ST. THOMAS IN HISTORICAL SEASON OPENER

(January 31, 2020) – Florida National University softball team (2-0) began their season winning both games of a doubleheader against St. Thomas University (0-2) on Friday evening from Colonel Jacquelin J. Kelly Field, home of the St. Thomas University Bobcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Florida National claimed their first lead of the game, scoring on a throwing error, following a stolen base.
  • The Conquistadors added another run in the top of the fourth inning, with an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Uribe became the first Bobcat to reach first base, in the bottom of the fourth inning, on a hit-by-pitch to end the FNU perfect game attempt.
  • FNU added another run with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, extending their lead to 3-0.
  • Lucia Esposito entered the game as a pinch-hitter and got STU on the board, singling to right field to drive in Artiles.
  • Florida National added two more runs, on a two-run double, as the Conquistadors now lead 5-1.
  • STU went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, losing the season opener, 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • FNU led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run, tying the game 1-1.
  • The game remained tied 1-1 until the top of the fourth inning; the Conquistadors scored two more on a two-run home run to take a 3-1 advantage.
  • The Bobcats responded with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning; Esposito doubled to left-center, bringing in Artiles and Defalco to tie the game; Descheene singled to score Esposito, and Uribe singled to bring in Campos, giving St. Thomas a 5-3 lead.
  • Florida National battled for a four-run inning of their own, as two consecutive two-out hits led to two-runs and the go-ahead run scoring on a wild pitch.
  • FNU scored three more runs, two in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to extend their lead to 10-6.
  • St. Thomas went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, losing game two of the doubleheader, 10-6.

WHAT’S NEXT:

Florida National University men and women’s tennis team will now face College of Coastal Georgia for a double-header on Sunday, February 2nd at 1:00 pm. The game will take place at Brownwick, GA.
