Masters in Nursing Requirements: How to Increase Chance of Acceptance

Masters in Nursing Requirements: How to Increase Chance of AcceptanceThe decision to further your education by earning a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) is a big one. Experienced leaders are highly sought after, and the competition to get into a good program is fierce. At Florida National University (FNU), we offer a comprehensive master’s program that will help you meet the demand for skilled, motivated nursing professionals.

Who is an MSN Degree Designed For?

An MSN program is aimed toward nursing professionals who desire to progress in their careers, ensure that they have the most current training, and those who want to move into health care management or education.

Before deciding on a university, research as many universities as possible. It’s important to know as much as you can about the curriculum, learning environment, and support services to help you find the right fit for your learning style and goals. This will also allow you to customize your applications to each school. If you live locally or are visiting the city where the university is located, arrange to tour the campus or audit a few classes to get a feel for the institution. Talk to the professors, nursing advisers, and current students.

Increasing Your Odds of Acceptance

The first step is to get correct and up-to-date information about entrance requirements, obtain all of the forms you’ll need, and fill everything out as completely as possible. In addition to your transcripts and application forms, you may be required to submit an essay or attend an interview before acceptance. The interview protocol may differ from institution to institution, but it will generally follow this basic format:

  • Why do you want to be a nurse?

  • Can you discuss a current trend or topic in nursing?

  • What are some of your strengths and weaknesses?

  • Talk about some of your nursing experience or describe a time when you were able to meet a professional challenge.

  • How much time are you able to devote to your studies and practical requirements?

If you’re required to submit an essay, you should cover the same information you might face in an interview. However, find a way to make it unique and show some of your personality. Those reading your essay won’t have the opportunity to evaluate you in person. Talk a little about your own journey toward a career in nursing, what skills or traits your will bring into the profession, and where you see yourself in the future.

Check and Check Again

Before your deadline, go over all of the requirements again, reread all forms to make sure you’ve answered all relevant questions, and have everything packaged neatly. Have someone read over your forms, essays, and other documents to check for proper grammar, spelling, and accuracy. Make note of any deadlines and have all of your paperwork together and ready to submit well in advance.

You want to present an image of someone who is polished, professional, and organized. Your application should include referral letters, both personal and professional, accounts of any volunteer work, and proof of additional certifications or training.

After You Apply to Your Schools

Keep track of which schools you’ve applied to and when you submitted your application. Try not to stress or second-guess yourself while you wait for replies, and don’t feel bad if you’re turned down. Many applicants aren’t accepted on their first try. You can always get some feedback and use that information to apply again.

Masters in Nursing Requirements: How to Increase Chance of AcceptanceThe MSN Program at Florida National University

We offer two paths to an advanced nursing degree at FNU: a traditional master’s program and a fast track RN-to-MSN program; both require 500 hours of practicum for graduation. Each of these degrees is available in their entirety through our online distance-learning program. You also have the option of going the traditional route by enrolling at one of our two campuses located in Hialeah and Miami. Whichever program you choose, you’ll still have access to all of the support you need for success, including students resources and job search assistance after graduation.

MSN Program Requirements

The RN-to-MSN degree program comprises a minimum of 55 credit hours. You’ll also need a combination of education and professional experience that includes an active RN license and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Foreign students will need a DON or foreign medical degree that has transcript equivalencies from an accredited credential-evaluation agency.

The traditional MSN program can be completed with a minimum of 36 credits. It requires an undergraduate degree in nursing, an active RN license, and professional experience. Our program is offered with three concentrations: Nurse Educator, Nurse Leadership/Management, and Family Nurse Practitioner. Those seeking an FNP designation must also obtain an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Board certification to become licensed in the state of Florida.

Why Choose FNU to Further Your Education?
