Men’s Soccer Blanks St. Thomas, 2-0

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 18, 2021) – For the second time this season, the Florida National men’s soccer team (4-1) shut out the (rv) St. Thomas Bobcats (11-4), 2-0, on Thursday evening from the STU Soccer Field.

The Conquistadors used second-half goals by Manuel Rodriguez and Blas Alfredo Barrancos gave the Conquistadors their second-straight win over this year’s Sun Conference Tournament Champions.

After an evenly-played first half, FNU broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute with Rodriguez’ first goal of the season. The junior from Buenos Aires, Argentina, received a pass from Tomas Barrancos resulting in a breakaway with only the goalkeeper to beat. Rodriguez slotted a shot to the right side of STU goalkeeper Franco Acerbi for the score. T. Barrancos notched his first assist of the season on the score.

Fifteen minutes later, Blas Alfredo Barrancos added to his team-leading, goal-scoring total, registering his sixth score of the season. On a Barrancos-to-Barrancos connection, FNU extended its lead to 2-0 in the 86th minute. T. Barrancos registered his second assist of the contest on the play.

Goalkeeper Victor Ruiz Lasso earned his fourth win of the year, recording shutout number two of the year. The native of Quito, Ecuador, kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard, making eight saves in the contest.

FNU will return to action, taking on Southeastern on Wednesday, March 24. Game time from Lakeland, Florida, is set for 7:00 p.m.
