SUMTER, SC. (April 13, 2024) – Florida National University’s baseball team (19-21) posted a shutout victory over the Morris College Hornets to close out a four-game series with a 3-1 record. A stellar 24-0 win in game one was a prelude to a 16-8 win in game two on the diamond in Sumter, South Carolina. Game two also marked a historic 19th win for the Conquistadors. This is the first time an FNU team has posted that many wins in a season. FNU ended last season 16-19, breaking the previous program record for wins at 14.

In game one, pitcher Bastyan Hernandez was a star on the mound, allowing no runs through seven innings of work. Posting nine strikeouts, the South Florida native claimed one of his best games of the season. Surgical hitter Jordan Lewis blasted a homer and two stolen bases in the win. The Conquistadors recorded 23 hits and 21 RBIs versus four different MC pitchers. Erick Rodriguez claimed two of those hits, including a triple.

FNU continued to find its stride in game two, taking a 9-3 lead after the first inning. Homers from Daniel Silgado and Rodriguez stole the show as FNU notched 18 hits. Lewis picked up two steals in the win as Silgado impressed with five RBIs.

The Hornets were stagnant for a majority of the game, ending the evening with 12 hits and eight runs. Three different MC players took the mound and each struggled to handle the Conquistadors’ firepower. With these two crucial Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) wins, FNU stands at 7-3 in conference play.

Up Next: Florida National is in Lawrenceville, Ga., for the CAC Showdown beginning April 19.
