PLANTATION, Fla. (March 29, 2023) – Florida National University’s baseball team sat in prime position to turn its rematch versus the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles into an exciting battle down the stretch.

Trailing 3-0 with bases loaded at the top of the sixth, FNU fell short of the win after heavy rain caused play to come to a halt. This delay would eventually lead to a cancellation of game two and the Conquistadors were awarded their eleventh loss of the 2023 season after five complete innings. This is also their second loss versus the 20-13 Eagles.

The Eagles struck first in the opening inning, as a costly walk caused the Conquistadors the first run of the afternoon. UFTL’s Wilbert Vargas cruised in for the score and a two-RBI single from JD Tibbs was just enough to secure the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth. Designated hitter Roberto Fernandez got things rolling in the fourth with a single, but the Eagles’ defense got three quick outs to stop FNU’s momentum.

At the top of the sixth, a single from Matthew Gonzalez was followed by a walk and an error from the Eagles’ third baseman that pushed Gonzalez to third, leaving Gino Bellantoni and Fernandez on second and first, respectively. But mother nature had other plans. Heavy downpour thwarted any chance of an FNU comeback and lead to a cancellation of game two.

FNU collected four hits and two errors while the Eagles had two hits and one error.

Up Next: FNU travels to Lakeland, Fla., to face the  No. 1 Southeastern Fire April 5.
