Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Ave Maria on Friday

AVE MARIA, Fla. (March 5, 2021) – The Florida National baseball team (4-10) wrapped up a three-game series with the Ave Maria Gyrenes (8-13) with a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon from Bowie’s Ballpark on the campus of Ave Maria University.

In Game One, FNU downed the Gyrenes, 6-4, thanks to a two-run top of the seventh.

RBI singles by Ezequiel Valdez Florentino and Joshua Smith in the top of the seventh guided FNU to the two-run victory.

AMU scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Conquistadors posted three runs on their own in the top of the second to even the score, 3-3. Daniel Rodriguez and Edgar Perez each drove in runs during the frame.

After AMU regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, FNU took the lead for good in the top of the seventh for the teams fourth win of the season.

Valdez Florentino went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Conquistadors.

John Louthan (1-1) earned the victory, tossing two scoreless innings of relief.

Game Two saw the Gyrenes take the series on a walk-off hit-by-pitch. After taking a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, FNU allowed runs on a sac fly and a pair of “hit-by-pitch”, the second bringing the game-winning run.

The Conquistadors scored four runs on six hits but a rough bottom of the seventh resulted in the 5-4 loss.

Smith led all Conquistadors at the dish, recorded two hits in the game. Valdez Florentino accounted for two of the team’s four total runs.

Louthan (1-2), Game One’s winner, suffered the loss, allowing one run on no hits in two-thirds innings pitched.

The Conquistadors will take on Bryant & Stratton in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 11, in Palm Beach, Florida.
