VIERA, Fla. (March 6, 2023) – Florida National University’s softball team fell short of a near-perfect tournament run at the USSA Space Coast Games in Viera, Fla. following a 10-3 loss to the Trinity Christian College Trolls Monday. FNU held a six-game winning streak that started with a 2-0 sweep of the Keiser Seahawks on Feb. 28.
The Trolls started strong with a two-hit, two-run inning in the first with one runner left on. Bailey Fernandez and Ana De Oliveira Obando got off two hits in the first frame but FNU could not convert their hits into runs.
FNU finally came through with a much-needed score off Janessa Esquibel’s triple that pushed home De Oliveira Obando to make the score a manageable 3-1.
A sacrifice fly to center field from Yleisha Perez allowed pinch runner Alexis Lendo to slide into home cutting the Trolls’ lead to 3-2 heading into the fifth. Things took a turn when FNU gave up a two-run, one-hit inning to TCC.
FNU first baseman Madison Chiudina scored FNU’s final run of the afternoon off a single from Perez. The Trolls had five runs and four hits through the final two innings to secure a hard-earned win.FNU ended the game with nine hits and two errors. The Trolls collected 12 hits and one error.
