Conquistadors survive seven-inning thriller for 4-3 win

VIERA, Fla. (March 10, 2023) – Florida National University’s softball team earns another perfect day in Viera, Fla., after a stellar 4-3 win over the Crimson Wave of Calumet College. FNU executed a solid seventh inning to earn a close victory over a tough Crimson Wave team in game two of the afternoon.

Calumet got on the board first with one run and one hit in the opening inning. Yleisha Perez got a solid double in the first but FNU was unable to hang on any runs before Calumet got three outs. FNU fell behind 2-0 after an RBI single from the Crimson Wave. A single from Janessa Esquibel to right field allowed Tara McCaffery to cut the lead in half in the second.

The Crimson Wave answered in the fifth collecting one run and a hit before retiring the side. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, FNU’s Ana De Oliveira Obando bombed a solo homer to left field. Alexis Lendo scored on an error to tie it up before heading into the seventh.

Pitcher Dakota Kulis got the job done in the seventh allowing no hits in the frame. Kulis collected two strikeouts and the Falcons had just seven hits against her from the circle for the ball game.

At the bottom of the inning, the game-winning score came off a single from De Oliveira Obando to center field. The base hit allowed Perez to record the walk-off run to end the game.
