Eighth Inning Dooms Conquistadors at Florida Memorial, 9-6

MIAMI Gardens, Florida (February 23, 2021) – Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Florida National baseball team (3-6) held a 6-5 lead over Florida Memorial (6-4). However, four runs by the Lions in the bottom of the eight led to a 9-6 loss for the Conquistadors on Tuesday.

FNU rattled off six runs on nine hits with two errors versus the Lions. The Conquistadors twice overcame an early deficit to take the lead, scoring two runs in the top of the second on RBIs by Daniel Rodriguez and Francisco Perez De Leon, and knocking in two in the top of the fourth after Rodriguez doubled to center field with the bases loaded.

After taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth, FNU rattled off two more runs to extend its lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth. The Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it, 6-5 FNU.

The Conquistadors carried that lead into the bottom of the eight before FMU a crooked number for the Lions gave the home team the lead for good.

Rodriguez ended the afternoon going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and a run scored. Perez De Leon also went 2-for-4 from the dish, scoring run and driving another in. Jasiel Perez drove in two for FNU, hitting 1-for-5 with a double.

On the bump, John Louthan (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits in a third of an inning.

FNU will return to action on Friday, February 26, taking on the No. 1-ranked Southeastern Fire from Lakeland, Florida. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
