FNU Softball Swept by Ave Maria in Tuesday Doubleheader

AVE MARIA, Fla. (February 15, 2021) – The Florida National softball (1-6) suffered a pair of losses on Tuesday, falling to Ave Maria in a Tuesday doubleheader.

In the first game, FNU suffered a 10-2 loss in six innings to the Gyrenes. The Conquistadors scored two runs on four hits while allowing 10 runs on 12 hits. Leading Florida National at the dish was Zaira Nunez who went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Conquistadors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but four runs in the bottom of the half of the inning put AMU ahead. FNU added a run in the top of the second. However, the Gyrenes rattled off six unanswered runs to close out the game, 10-2.

Natasha Trujillo (0-2) was credited with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings pitched.

In Game Two, the Ave Maria downed the Conquistadors, 12-3 (5 innings) as FNU scored three runs on seven hits while allowing 12 runs on 14 hits.

Nini Underwood was perfect from the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Again, the Conquistadors jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. AMU responded with three runs in its half of the inning to take the lead. The Gyrenes extended their lead with five runs on the third and four in the fourth.

FNU scored a run in the top of the fifth but it was not enough as the game ended by run-rule, 12-3.

Gabryella Hay (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing 12 runs on 14 hits in four innings pitched.

The Conquistadors will next travel to Brunswick, Georgia, to take part in a four-team tournament hosted by Coastal Georgia, beginning Thursday, February 18.
