HIALEAH, Fla. ( Oct. 13, 2023) – Florida National University’s Women’s volleyball team (6-10) capped off a tough week of competition with a 3-0 sweep of the Florida Memorial University Lions (3-7). The Lions put up a good fight through three sets, including 21 points in the third, before ultimately falling on the road. This is FNu’s first win at home this season aside from a sweep over the University of the Bahamas in exhibition play.

The Lions handed FMU a 3-0 loss in the early going of this season in dominant fashion on Sept. 9. The FMU tri-match was a showcase of pure skill for FMU, as the Lions ended their home opener with wins over FNU and Edward Waters University.

In game one, FNU came out with electric energy, defeating the Lions 25-12. The Conquistadors had 23 kills over its first two sets, including 13 kills for Layla Cortez through three sets played. FMU struggled to get their attack moving, scoring a .192 hitting percentage in the first with just eight kills in the frame.

The second saw FNU win 25-19 thanks to excellent team movement of the ball. FNU had an answer to all of FMU’s scoring measures, including some solid solo blocking from Kamille Lucas. In the third and final set, FMU looked prime to extend the game after taking a 5-1 lead to start the frame. But FNU stayed the course and weathered this early run from the Lions, eventually taking the set 25-21.

Lefty Elis Cordova-Millet had seven kills in the victory and Juliana Santos had a team-high 11 digs.
