LAKES WALES, Fla. ( Oct. 28, 2022) The Royals went 2-0 against the Conquistadors as both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Warner in Lake Wales, Florida, Friday. The Conquistadors fell victim to a poor shooting night from close range, as FNU only had eight points in the paint to the Royal’s 46. The Conquistadors did outwit their opponent from behind the arc, going 10-25 to the Royals 2-16, but this did not stop the royals from starting their season 1-0 while the Conquistadors stand winless for the time being.

The first half saw FNU’s Matthew Robinson put up nine points to lead the Conquistadors as Jovan Debrito also had seven points for the half. Florida National did not have a ton of help off the bench as Nicolas Girondias was the only reserve to score with two points. The same cannot be said for the Royals as they had 15 points from four different players off the bench. Jeremiah Saunders’ 11 points led the contest up until that point as both sides retied for halftime.

The Royals shot 64% from the field while Florida National hung at around the 30% mark for most of the contest. The second half saw Robinson record 15 more points to end the night with 24. FNU went an impressive 10-16 from behind the three-point line and guard Ryan Sanchez had nine points in the game and went 5-6 from the free-throw line in the second half. Despite shooting 51% from the field, Florida National was unable to overcome Warner’s lights-out shooting in the first half, as Royal Logan West put up nine points in the half.

Warner outrebounded the Conquistadors 29-24 and generated 12 second-chance points to the Conquistadors’ eight.

Up Next: Conquistadors’ men’s basketball returns to the court against No. 21 Florida College at 7 p.m. in Temple Terrace, Florida.
