What Military Education Benefits Are Available for Military Spouses?

Military spouses have access to several educational benefits that can help cover the costs of school. Here are the most common options:

MyCAA (My Career Advancement Account): MyCAA offers up to $4,000 in tuition assistance to eligible military spouses.

Transferred Post-9/11 GI BillÂŽ Benefits: Service members who qualify for the Post-9/11 GI BillÂŽ can transfer unused benefits to their spouse. This benefit covers tuition and fees, monthly housing allowances, and book stipends.

  • The service member must have served for at least 6 years and agree to serve an additional 4 years.
  • The transfer must be requested while the individual is still on active duty.

How Do Military Spouses Apply for VA Benefits?

If you are a military spouse, you may qualify for VA education benefits like the Post-9/11 GI Bill® (if transferred to you) or Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA/Chapter 35). Here is how to apply:

Step 1: Determine Which Benefit You Are Using

Option #1: Transferred Post-9/11 GI BillÂŽ (Chapter 33)

Your service member must transfer the benefit to you while still on active duty through the DoD’s milConnect portal. Once approved, you can apply through the VA.

Option #2: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)

This option is for spouses of:

  • Veterans who died or were seriously disabled due to service.
  • Veterans who are missing in action or detained by a hostile force.

Step 2: Apply Online Through the VA

Choose the application that fits your benefit type:

  • VA Form 22-1990E: For spouses using transferred Post-9/11 GI BillÂŽ.
  • VA Form 22-5490: For DEA (Chapter 35) benefits.

You will need:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your spouse’s information (including VA file number or SSN)

Your school must certify your enrollment through the VA. We manage the paperwork to schedule tuition payments and housing allowance (if eligible). You may also need to verify your attendance monthly, depending on the benefit.
