The United States (US) typically attracts a great number of international students because of the quality of higher education and opportunities that follow after achieving a college degree. It’s our goal to provide international students with the tools and opportunities needed to complete their college education.
Following Through with Our Goal
As an international student, it is critical to have the means to pay for your education. Since our goal is to help further students’ education, our institution is dedicated to doing everything we can to ensure that students stay in college. All too often many students will enroll in college, but may not finish. There could be a great number of reasons for not being able to complete a college program, but being able to pay for tuition can often be a huge factor.
FNU Helping You Afford Your Education
FNU has a competent financial aid department that assists our students in being able to afford their college education. We offer help with applying for federal loans, pell grants and scholarships.
The first step to qualify for any kind of financial aid is to fill out the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid. Even if you have no intention of taking out a student loan, we encourage you to complete this form.
FAFSA May Still Be Necessary for International Students
This is usually what some scholarship programs require. While international students are not eligible for United States government financial aid assistance, some universities still require students to complete the form in order to determine their financial need. This is helpful information for donors who are looking to award the student who might be most qualified or in financial need of their scholarship.
Keep in mind that there are different kinds of scholarships available to students. Some may be based on academia. Some may be based on economical hardship. Others might be based on the region, the school, race, gender, or even athletics. It’s truly up to the donor since it’s their contribution. Donors are less likely willing to give their money away to a student that the federal government has not vetted, which is why filling out the FAFSA is often a requirement for international students.
What Kind of Scholarships are Available for International Students?
It takes some work to find the scholarships that you might be eligible for as an international student. Finding an applicable scholarship is time consuming and requires a great deal of research. While FNU has a long list of scholarships for our students, we would like to bring the International Scholarship for International Students to your attention.
The International Scholarship for International Students
This scholarship has been established for International Students previously graduated from an ESL program at FNU. Specific programs are not eligible for the scholarship. These programs are: Nursing, Respiratory Therapy AS, Respiratory Therapy BS Degree RRT to BS-RRT (Advanced), and Physical Therapist Assistant.
The scholarship is to be awarded to international students who have graduated from an ESL program at FNU and will re-enroll in an associate or baccalaureate degree program.
Many people come to the US with no intention to pursue a college degree, but one thing is certain, most understand that in order to thrive as an American citizen, they must master the English language. Being located in South Miami with our main campus in Hialeah, Florida, our university has a high enrollment rate for our ESL certificate program.
FNU’s ESL’s Certificate Program
FNU’s ESL’s certificate program is offered in three tiers: Basic, Intermediate, and High Int. Level. Also, keep in mind that it’s not uncommon for students to enroll in the Basic level, and then graduate to the Intermediate, up onto the highest level. However, each student will need to take a placement test in order for the ESL department to determine which level will be most beneficial for you.
Each certificate program requires a minimum of 18 credit hours and takes 8 months to complete. In addition to completing the ESL program, students must also maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. The ESL Program is offered at a discounted rate.
Back to the Scholarship Program!
After successful completion of FNU’s ESL program, and demonstrating a cognitive proficiency of the English language, you will have the opportunity to enroll in any of our associate degree programs with up to half the tuition paid for the semester should you win the International Scholarship for International Students award.
Here are the eligible associate degree programs that an International Scholarship for International Students recipient can enroll in:
Here are the associate degree programs that DO NOT apply to this particular scholarship:
- Respiratory Therapy
- Physical Therapist
Any remaining costs outside of the tuition including registration and application fees are the student’s responsibility. This scholarship is awarded toward the tuition only.
Are There Other Scholarships Available for International Students?
This particular scholarship program is the only one that international students can apply for at FNU. It is the only one at our university that is open for ESL graduates to apply for. We believe that this is a great opportunity for international students because the remaining scholarships do not apply to students who are studying an ESL program. This is one of the reasons why we created this scholarship. We recognize the desire of some ESL graduates who want to further their education, and FNU strives to provide all of our students with the resources they need to succeed and realize their dreams of becoming a college graduate and working professional.
