Volleyball grinds out a win against Warner in gritty five-set thriller

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2022) – Florida National University’s women’s volleyball team captured its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, overpowering Warner University in five sets. The 3-2 victory marks the Conquistadors’ first win of the Florida College Tournament and the Royals’ fourth loss in as many games.

 

Set One FNU Notables (21-25)

  • After falling behind 3-4, the Conquistadors managed to even the set at eight a piece
  • Four kills for Layla Cortez in the opening set
  • Warner pulled away with the point following an impressive run of kills

 

Set Two FNU Notables (25-17)

  • First set victory for the Conquistadors this season
  • Three kills for Joanna Dania and four from Layla Cortez highlighted the second set
  • Three assist for Maria Liva as FNU pulled off the late lead to capture the point

 

Set Three FNU Notables (25-21)

  • Trailed 14-17 before a flurry of attack errors by Warner opened the door for FNU to take a 20-18 lead
  • Sofia Moreno Bendala recorded a block
  • A service error and two attack errors by the Royals closed out the set and gave FNU a 2-1 match lead

 

Set Four FNU Notables (14-25)

  • The royal came back strong in this set countering much of FNU’s attacks
  • Two kills and one assist for Elis Cordova-Millet
  • Service errors along with attack errors on FNU’s side allowed Warner to force a fifth set

 

Set Five FNU Notables (15-12)

  • FNU came out in attack mode early securing a 3-1 lead
  • Lead for the majority of the set and closed out the victory on a kill by Layla Cortez
  • Elis Cordova-Millet recorded two more kills in the set


Match Notables:

  • Thirty-five team kills for FNU
  • Layla Cortez with a team-high 12 kills and 19 digs
  • Twelve team blocks
