Volleyball Opens Season at STU Invitational

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (August 20, 2021) – The Florida National volleyball team (0-2) opened the 2021 season at the STU Invitational, falling to the No. 1-ranked Missouri Baptist Spartans, 3-0 (25-7, 25-21, 25-16), and dropping a 3-0 decision to host-institution St. Thomas, 3-0 (25-11m 34-21, 25-14), on Friday.

The Conquistadors began the day facing the defending national champions. MBU jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking the first set, 25-7. FNU gave the Spartans a run for their money, pushing MBU, 25-21. The Spartans claimed the match, 3-0, taking the third set, 25-16.

Ariana Long led all Conquistadors with five kills in the match. She also posted eight digs. Carolina Arrais Dantas notched a team-high 13 digs versus the Spartans.

Later in the day, FNU took on St. Thomas, looking for the team’s first win of the season. The Bobcats held the Conquistadors in check, posting a 25-11 result in the first match. FNU responded with a set-two, dogfight. Both teams scored a combined 66 points as STU edged FNU, 34-32. The Bobcats clinched the match with a 25-14, third-set victory.

Long and Joanne Dania led FNU with 10 kills while Arrais Dantas notched 18 digs in the match.

FNU will return to action on Saturday, August 21, to close out the 2021 STU Invitational. The Conquistadors will face the No. 2-ranked Mildland Warriors. First serve is set for 9:00 AM.
