HIALEAH, Fla. (July 18, 2023) – For the first time in Haiti’s history, its women’s soccer team qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Aboard this limited 25-woman roster and one of three goalkeepers on the team is recent Florida National University 2023 signee, Nahomie Ambroise.

The star goalie out of Edison Senior High School and Little Haiti Football Club was selected to join the national team by manager Nicolas Delépine. Delépine, a native of France, was appointed as Haiti’s head coach in 2022. He secured the country’s first World Cup bid with a 2-1 win over Chile in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Playoff Tournament.

Ambroise is the first women’s soccer player in FNU history to participate in the FIFA World Cup.

“The Women’s World Cup is the highest tournament one can play in,” FNU head coach Giovanni De la Rosa said. “We are so proud of her accomplishment and wish her and Haiti the very best.”

Haiti’s road to the World Cup was filled with adversity and paved by a true belief in conquering the impossible. According to a report by The Associated Press, Haiti’s women’s team had its training center closed due to gang violence and is making this trip with little to no sponsor support.

Ambroise and Haiti will compete in Group D looking to upset one of the top contenders for this year’s title, the Lionesses of England. China and Denmark round out the rest of the field in group play, as the Haitians continue to represent the dreams of a small island nation on the world stage.

Haiti’s first game of the tournament is scheduled for July 22 versus England at 5:30 A.M. EST.
