TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Nov. 12, 2022) – Florida National advances to the Continental Athletic Conference title match after a thrilling five-set semifinal match against Haskell Indian Nations University. This was the third meeting between these teams and the second time a match was pushed to five sets. FNU advances to the CAC final match against Florida College.

Set One FNU Notables (18-25)

  • Haskell jumped out to a 15-10 lead after tying the set at 6-6
  • Five kills for CAC All-Conference first-teamer Joanne Dania
  • Haskell’s Maria Stewart ended the set with a kill to make it 25-18

 

Set Two FNU Notables (25-19)

  • Paola Brandsma came to life in the second with three kills on the set
  • Joanne Dania ended the set with a kill on an assist from Ivette Sandoval
  • Tied the match at 1-1 and put FNU back in the driver’s seat for the moment

 

Set Three FNU Notables (19-25)

  • Haskell’s Mikeya Sheppard had six kills in the third that pushed her team over the Conquistadors
  • A block error by Gabriela Gonzalez gave Haskell a 2-1 lead in the match
  • Ivette Sandoval had two ball-handling errors in the set

 

Set Four FNU Notables (25-20)

  • Aysa Benally’s kill about midway through the set made it a tie game at 11-11
  • Two kills apiece for Layla Cortez and Lina Valentino
  • A kill by Paola Brandsma ended the set in FNU’s favor

 

Set Five FNU Notables (16-14)

  • FNU started the set off strong with a kill from Layla Cortez
  • Tied 14-14 before FNU scored the final two points of the match to close out the win
  • FNU remains undefeated against Haskell this season boasting a 3-0 record

 

Match Notables:

  • Team-high 13 kills for Joanne Dania to go along with 16 digs
  • Juliana Santos recorded 29 digs in the contest
  • Two solo blocks and one assisted block for Gabriela Gonzalez
