MIAMI SHORES, Fla. ( Nov. 29, 2022) Florida Nationa University’s women’s basketball team was unable to overcome the Barry University Buccaneers Tuesday, falling 65-36. This marks the second exhibition loss this year for FNU who remain 2-4 this season. The NCAA Division II Buccaneers improves to 3-4 in the 2022-23 season after going 2-1 in their last three contest.

The first half for the Conquistadors was plagued by poor shooting from the field despite FNU earning a 7-6 lead in the early minutes of the contest. The Conquistadors struggled to keep possession of the ball, coughing up 14 turnovers that resulted in 12 points for the Buccaneers.

Janelisse Marty Marrero had five points in the contest through two periods and Natalie Larranaga had four points on 2-6 shooting as Barry ended the half with a 31-16 lead.

The third quarter saw FNU come alive on the defensive end as a heads-up steal from freshman Kaylee Llanos cut Barry’s lead to 33-27. But once again the turnover bug reared its ugly head and FNU gave up eight in the third as Barry ended the period with a 42-29 lead.

Down in the post, despite the deficit, FNU’s Tyra Kirlew had a team-high nine points on 4-6 shooting for the period. Her effectiveness on the floor was a great sign for FNU’s efficiency, as the Conquistadors struggled to get production from their reserves while Barry had 40 bench points for the evening.

In the final frame, the Conquistadors fell short of a comeback win despite a quiet 11-point night from Larranaga. Llanos ended her night with seven points and five rebounds.
