Late-Game Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss at Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (March 4, 2021) – The Florida National baseball team (3-9) fell to the Ave Maria Gyrenes (7-12), 7-5, on Thursday afternoon in Game One of a three-game series.

The Conquistadors, trailing 7-2, in the top of the ninth, cut the AMU lead with three runs. RBIs by Simon Dalmau and Gabriel Vasquez led the way as FNU had the tying run in scoring position with two outs. However, a groundout to the pitcher ended the rally and handed the Conquistadors their sixth-straight loss.

Joshua Smith accounted for two of FNU’s scores, going 1-for-3 including a walk in the contest.

The Gyrenes jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four and carried that lead into the seventh before the Conquistadors got on the board with two runs. Francisco Perez De Leon singled to left to drive in the team’s first run followed by an RBI single by Daniel Rodriguez to make the score 4-2.

AMU tacked on three more runs to extend its lead, 7-2, heading into the top of the ninth.

Mario Benjamin (1-2) suffered the loss allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of action.

Game Two of this three-game set is scheduled for Friday, March 5, with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch.
